Story
Born and raised in Hart, Thomas Schaner was a lifelong resident of Oceana County. After graduating from Hart High School, he opened Tom’s Barber Shop in Shelby. With a warm greeting and friendly smile, Thomas worked as a barber for fifty-three years. Outside of his business, he served Oceana County as a member of our local EMS and shared his passion for music. Thomas and his wife, Pat, played in the Pentwater Civic Band for over sixty years. Thomas additionally played with the Scottville Clown Band and the West Shore Woodwinds. After he sadly passed in March 2020, Thomas’s friends and family established the Thomas Schaner Memorial Scholarship Fund in his honor. Designed to honor Thomas’s passions, the scholarship is designed to support local students pursuing a career in music or a skilled trade; the scholarship has a preference to those studying for a career in barbering or emergency services like Thomas.
