Story
This scholarship fund was established through the trust of Mereta Spitler – Seth and Margaret’s only child. Mereta’s parents grew up in Hart, and, as a family, they spent many weekends and summers enjoying the area. Seth graduated from Michigan State College in 1935 and was commissioned as a First Lieutenant in the U.S. Army ROTC program. During WWII, he served in Algeria and Tunisia and later was sent back to the European Theatre for the Battle of the Bulge. After the war, he served at many bases in the U.S. He later taught infantry techniques at Fort Benning, Georgia, and retired as a Lt. Colonel. He worked with the Veterans Administration from 1946-1960. Following that, he worked with the State of Michigan, Disability Section, Department of Education. They were avid Spartan football fans, holding season tickets for over 50 years. Their scholarship is designed to help graduating seniors of Hart pursue higher education and fulfill their dreams.
