General support of Hart Public Schools for educational programs and scholarships in the name of Mr. Diman’s fallen WWII Army comrade and HHS alumni Donald W. Wolf
Story
“Semper Fi” Ask any marine what that means, and they will proudly tell you it means “always faithful.” For Robert Edward Diman, “Semper Fi” was truly revealed in his faithfulness to his friend, Donald William Wolf, who was killed in action in the battle of Guadalcanal. Bob left his entire estate of $2.5 million in memory of his boyhood friend and fellow marine to the Hart Public Schools Foundation. Bob & Don graduated from Hart High School in the 1930s and fought together in the South Pacific. This fund supports scholarships for graduating seniors. “By all accounts, he was a seemingly ordinary man who was able to do an extraordinary amount of good for the youth of our community. His gift leaves a legacy that will live on through future generations of Hart students,” said Hart Foundation President Tony Monton. Remembered locally as a loner, Bob moved away from Hart in his late 20’s and lived the remainder of his life quietly in California, having never married. On the other hand, Don lived his life clearly in the spotlight – star high school athlete, member of the elite 1st Marine Raider Battalion, husband for just 4 short months, the first WWII casualty from this community, and posthumously the recipient of the Navy Cross. Clearly, Bob’s legacy has just begun. Supporting over hundreds of students since 2006 with over $1.5 million in scholarships, this award is among the most impactful programs of the Community Foundation for Oceana County.
