Purpose
This fund supports equal access to extracurricular activities and the unmet needs of Oceana County children, in memory of Dr. Ralph Horton – beloved dentist and Shelby Public Schools long-time school board member.
Story
This Fund was established by family and friends of Dr. Ralph Horton to honor his life's passions of helping kids - to provide equal access to extracurricular activities (camp, clubs, sports fees & uniforms etc) and to help provide for unmet needs of area children (from snow boots, to eyeglasses, to IPads for autistic children) for Shelby Public School students. School advocates identify basic needs and contact the advisory committee for Ralph's Kids for assistance. Through the networking of volunteers, they are able to provide items essential to a child's well-being and provide tools that foster educational growth. Since 1973, Dr. Ralph Horton served nearly every community in Oceana County with dental care, with offices in Hart, Hesperia, New Era & Shelby. He also visited Walkerville monthly to bring dental services to more remote areas. He proudly served the Shelby community as a school board member for 20 years - his legacy continuing with the election of his son Jeremy Horton to the board. He had a heart for youth and was always looking for ways to help kids with unmet needs.
