Story
Mr. Clarence Metzler served as Hart's band director from 1948 until his retirement in 1986. During his tenure, he built the band into a regional powerhouse earning numerous awards at District and State band competitions and participating in band days at Michigan State University and Detroit Lions football games. Several students under his guidance went on to excel in venues such as the elite U.S. Army Band and the University of Michigan Marching Band. Mr. Metzler changed lives. Mr. Metzler is fondly remembered by his former students, many of whom celebrate their time in the Hart Band online through the past decade. Now adults, many credit him with not only influencing their own growth but also for their children's love of music. The development of the Clarence Metzler Memorial Scholarship Program was led and funded by Hart High School 1963 graduates (and former band members), Jim Stover and Karen Trommater Stover. Greatly impacted by Mr. Metzler’s dedication and creativity, Mr. Metzler nurtured their shared love of music. Jim and Karen were enthusiastic band members under Mr. Metlzer’s leadership, leading to fantastic opportunities like band days at Michigan State University and Detroit Lion games. In remembering their time in the Hart Band, they thought it right to give back. The Scholarship Program encourages students to continue in the same kind, dedicated spirit as Mr. Metzler.
