Story
Dr. Barry Ross was the former Assistant Conductor of the Kalamazoo Symphony. He studied at the Hartt School of Music, and graduate with a Master’s Degree and Doctorate of Musical Arts from Yale University. After moving to the Midwest forty years ago, he shared his love of music with the community in a variety of ways. As a Professor of Music Emeritus at Kalamazoo College, Dr. Ross established the Kalamazoo College and Community Orchestra, now the Kalamazoo Philharmonia, and acted as the Concertmaster of the Kalamazoo Symphony for over thirty years. In wanting to connect young people with music, he created the Kalamazoo Symphony’s Family Discovery Concerts, BeethovenFest! and the String Orchestra of Kalamazoo; these programs not only teach young listeners about classical music, but also provide ways for them to develop their own talent. As an artist, Dr. Ross was renowned for his ability to play the violin. In addition to playing classical music, Dr. Ross learned to play jazz and pop to expand his musical knowledge. He played throughout the country, as well as acted as a guest conductor and Concertmaster for multiple orchestras. Dr. Ross was a light within West Michigan’s musical community, as he strived to make symphony more accessible for all. His goal was to aid in making it a part of everyday life, something that he continuously worked on during his illustrious career as a teacher and performer.
