For graduating seniors of Shelby High School pursuing an accounting or business degree in memory of Emily Dykstra and her aunt Catherine Lound
Story
As a lifelong resident of New Era, Emily Dykstra explored her passion for business while working in local businesses. Empathetic and talented, Emily graduated from Shelby High School and went on to succeed at Western Michigan University, working towards completing her business degree. She brightened the lives of those around her through her infectious sense of humor and laughter. Emily cared deeply for her friends and family, often searching for ways to help others. “She often seemed to be able to think differently about things, and she was curious about the way the world worked,” Joan Lound, her aunt, remembers. Emily’s generous and kind spirit is honored in her Aunt Catherine Lound’s past presentation of this memorial scholarship. They volunteered and worked at the Shelby Public Library and Thomas Read Elementary, serving the community they loved. Together, Catherine and Emily share the namesake of this award. Emily’s four aunts, Catherine, Jeanne, Chris & Joanne, established her memorial scholarship following Emily’s passage after a four-year battle with cancer. The Emily Dykstra & Aunt Catherine Lound Scholarship is awarded to graduating Shelby High School seniors pursuing a degree in business or accounting. Both were fields of great interest to Emily. Her family hopes to encourage other young people to pursue business as a way to share their vision and positively impact the world around them, just as Emily did as a student, daughter, niece, and friend.
