Story
Born in 1946 in Shelby, Richard Tompkins was a lifelong resident of Oceana County. He graduated from Hart High School before earning his teaching degree from Michigan State University. After marrying his wife, Carole, Richard taught in Fremont and Reeths Puffer schools. Outside of the classroom, Richard was an active cross country and track-and-field coach. He served as the Executive Director of the Michigan High School Coaches Association and was later inducted into various Coaching Halls of Fame. Richard’s passion for athletes led him to serve as an official for wrestling and track-and-field events. While actively involved in his schools, Richard was deeply invested in Hart. He was an active participant of the Hart Lions Club, the Lighthouse Seekers Group, the Oceana Golf Club, and Mac Wood Dune Riders. The Richard and Carole Tompkins Scholarship is awarded to Oceana County students attending Michigan State University or Central Michigan University. Their scholarship hopes to inspire students seeking higher education and to help support their journey. Richard and Carole were heavily invested in supporting their community and aimed to do the same with their scholarship.
