Story
Mereta’s parents grew up in Hart and her family spent many weekends and summers here. Being an only child, Hart was a special place for her as she loved spending time playing as a child with all her cousins and visiting as she grew older. When Mereta was 18 years old, she was in a terrible car accident and spent the next year learning to walk, talk, and take care of herself again. She was a very determined person and went on to attend Michigan State University and earned her education degree.Through her experiences and innate desire to help others, Mereta dedicated her career to helping students with additional barriers to education. She was a teacher for the Grand Rapids Public Schools for over 30 years, first teaching in a classroom and then traveling to teach homebound students. She always remained a devoted MSU fan and this scholarship is awarded to a Hart student planning to attend Michigan State University.
