Summary
The W.O. Ezell Beautification Fund was created on January 1, 1979, to honor W.O. Ezell (1891-1979), whose love of gardening and flowers contributed to the beautification of Spartanburg. The fund is “devoted primarily to the use and assistance of the various garden clubs & beautification organizations” in Spartanburg. In addition to his managerial responsibilities at Geer Drug Company, Mr. Ezell spent tireless hours on his hands & knees planting flowers along the roadsides and public spaces of Spartanburg, frequently assisted by day laborers from the County Courthouse who he hired to plant alongside him. In part as a result of his efforts, Spartanburg gained national recognition for its beautification endeavors, earning Mr. Ezell an invitation to meet with Lady Bird Johnson in the Rose Garden of the White House. He was a founding member of the Spartanburg Men’s Garden Club (1950), & the portion of the Greenville Highway where he lived was renamed W.O. Ezell Boulevard in his honor.
