Amelia Heider Memorial Scholarship Fund

Amelia Heider had just turned 18 and was loving everything about her final year in high school. She was preparing for the state solo and ensemble competition, qualifying in five events. She was looking forward to Fine Arts Night, where she was going to perform and emcee. She had her final season of varsity soccer to finish and was looking forward to the spring band concert, a “sing and swing” concert and an acapella summit with her amazing acapella groups. She had all three of her AP tests to take and couldn’t wait to start college in the fall. Amelia was also a blood donor and after being deferred several times for anemia, she was diagnosed with Acute Myeloid Leukemia (AML) only a month before high school graduation. Over the next 20 months Amelia traded in her dorm room for a hospital room, undergoing many rounds of chemotherapy, a bone marrow transplant (donated by her sister) and participated in numerous cancer research trials in Madison, WI and Houston, TX. Amelia graduated from Lodi H.S. in 2022 and had planned on attending UW Eau Claire to continue her passion for the environment. Although that plan was delayed, Amelia was determined to not let cancer prevent her dream of attending college, ultimately taking online classes from her hospital room. Unfortunately, Amelia lost her battle with cancer on Dec. 14, 2023. This scholarship honors her legacy and is intended to help others complete Amelia’s dream of attending college. A Lodi High School graduate(s) who embodies Amelia’s passion, drive and spirit will be selected each year to receive this scholarship.

Bella Sobah Memorial Endowment for Social Justice

Bella’s passion for racial, social, and political justice guided her throughout her life and impacted the lives of many. Bella was born in Madison on August 9, 1994 to William Sobah and Najoua Ksontini. A lifelong resident of the east side of Madison, Bella graduated from La Follette High School in 2012 and obtained a B.S. degree in Genetics from the UW-Madison in 2016. Bella went on to earn her juris doctorate at the UW Law School in May 2020 and soon after began working as an attorney for the Dane County District Attorney’s Juvenile Unit, where Bella intended to bring positive change for racial and social justice in Madison. Bella passed away unexpectedly on Thursday, June 18, 2020. She was 25. Ever ready to engage on the issues of the day with her customary wit and strong opinions, Bella forced everyone she met to think critically about the world around them. As a law student, Bella proudly worked with the Neighborhood Law Clinic to help disadvantaged clients find justice in and out of the courtroom; she also served as Vice President of the Black Law Students Association. Outside of her academic career, Bella chaired the Disability Rights Commission for the City of Madison, where through her dedication and commitment, she helped to bring positive change for individuals with disabilities in Madison. Bella was outgoing. She had confidence, humor, and the natural ability to uplift those around her. Her reward was an innumerable number of friends, all of whom benefited from Bella’s vibrancy and sense of fun and adventure. Whether it was a concert in Chicago, a party in downtown Madison, or a fundraiser for a worthy local cause, Bella was always on the go and had the unique capacity to inspire and bring others along for the ride. Bella’s compassion, honesty, drive, fearlessness, and occasional silliness will be missed by all who knew her. Those wishing to honor Bella’s legacy are welcome to contribute to the Bella Sobah Memorial Fund for Social Justice. Annual giving from the Fund will benefit: Charitable Organizations that promote the betterment of marginalized communities Scholarships/awards for students pursuing work in Social Justice and Advocacy Thank you for helping keep Bella’s legacy alive!

Ben Balgord Memorial Scholarship

Ben Balgord was our favorite Father-Husband-Son-Brother-Teammate-Teacher-Friend. He was a graduate of Madison West High School where he was an honors student and played soccer as well as at the University of Wisconsin where he majored in Mechanical Engineering and cheered on the Badgers. He was full of life, bursting with love, warmth, curiosity, and joy. On April 24, 2024, our community lost a true treasure. This scholarship aims to keep his memory alive, supporting future scholars on their journey and will be awarded to a UW-System-bound, Madison West High School graduating senior meeting the following criteria: 1) Scholar athlete who’s demonstrated excellent academic performance, 2) First preference given to soccer players, with importance given to students who are team players, and who lift up those around them. Preference for students who have volunteered in, or are planning to focus their college studies on, an area related to mental health and/or suicide prevention.
