Jack was a longtime educator in the Madison Metropolitan School District who was beloved by students and colleagues alike. As the district’s first English as a Second Language (ESL) teacher, he played a significant role in shaping services for immigrant, refugee and other international students throughout Madison. He was also one of the very first district employees to be openly gay, coming out in the 1980s. Jack served as an ESL classroom teacher, program coordinator and professional development coach during his career, retiring to California where he continued to teach bilingual students and volunteer with organizations supporting asylum seekers and the LBGTQIA community. He was foremost a loving father, grandfather and husband, who also made and conscientiously maintained scores of friendships all over the world. To honor his legacy, his family has established a charitable fund to support scholarships for future teachers from a range of backgrounds who demonstrate financial need. Priority will be given primarily but not exclusively to those from the LBGTQIA community and underrepresented ethnic groups.
