Purpose
The George Taylor Scholarship is intended to reduce or eliminate student loan debt for successful graduates of Mississippi colleges or universities. Edward Walker initiated the Scholarship in 2021, inspired and named for its first recipient, George Taylor of Jonestown, Mississippi. George first attended Coahoma Community College and went on to obtain his bachelor’s degree from Tougaloo College in 2022. Since then, other successful scholarship recipients have benefited and graduated to begin their careers with little or no student debt. Graduating without a student debt burden allows recipients to start building financial security early and pass on generational wealth to the next generation. The endowed George Taylor Scholarship provides the selected applicant up to $10,000 per year in debt forgiveness, in each of their 3rd and 4th years. To remain eligible, students must successfully complete credit requirements at any Mississippi 4-year college or university, while maintaining a 3.0 grade point average upon graduation. Additional information and application for the George Taylor Scholarship can be obtained at Coahoma Community College.
