Dorothy would write poems of prayer, introspection, and fun or to honor people she loved for any special occasion. She had little formal education but valued it highly. Dorothy always thought that public education put far too little emphasis upon the written word. She would often muse, “Wouldn’t it be wonderful if poets got awards in schools, like athletes do! I think it’s just as remarkable to write a poem as it is to catch a football.” The Dorothy Capman Award is presented to Marshall Middle School students.
