Purpose
The John and Susan Collins Historic Preservation Scholarship was established by Susan Collins in memory of her husband John Collins, who was a significant leader of the preservation movement in the Midwest and especially in Michigan. Among his many accomplishments, John was a Board Member of the Historical Society of Michigan for 12 years and served as President from 1977-1979. He also spent 13 years as a member of the Michigan Historical Commission. John was responsible for the first walking tour of the historic homes in Marshall and for his locally famous cemetery tours which he conducted three times each summer for 17 years. John worked with Historic Preservation graduate students from Eastern Michigan, Ball State, Michigan State and Notre Dame Universities, often bringing them to Marshall for tours. The Scholarship is awarded to full time students pursuing a master’s or doctorate in Historic Preservation.
