Purpose of Fund
An endowed fund to support programs that promote the use biking and other forms of active transportation in greater Williamsburg. Those programs should aim to increase the percentage of trips taken by bicycle or other modes of active transportation as opposed to cars. The fund will not, as a general rule, fund infrastructure projects such as bike path construction or maintenance unless there are extenuating circumstances and on a one-time basis. Potential types of funding are listed below: • Public, community events that promote biking and other forms of active transportation for fun and recreation • Bicycling education for all ages including seminars and hands on training programs • A community bike center or similar organization that supports the refurbishment of used bikes (may also include training on how to refurbish the bikes) and the donation of bikes to adult individuals in need of assistance with transportation or for children whose families are otherwise unable to afford to purchase a bike for recreational use. • Purchase of bike helmets and other equipment for low-income families. • Bike racks or bike rest stations in public places. • Therapeutic biking programs that allow residents with limited mobility to have an experience that provides similar benefits to biking in a way that accommodates their needs. • Funds may be used to support programmatic staffing in these areas.
