Purpose
The Harley and Eva Pierce Memorial Scholarship was established in 2020. It’s purpose is to award financial aid for college to scholar-athletes who have excelled academically at Sturgis High School. Coach Harley Pierce came to Sturgis in 1957, as a high school health and physical education instructor, as well as the school’s football and tennis coach. At that time, he also started a popular summer tennis program. After leaving for a warmer climate in 1963, Coach Pierce returned in 1965, where he continued his teaching and coaching duties until his retirement in 1988. He was a dedicated teacher, who always stressed academic achievement, excellent citizenship, and doing your best. During his tenure at SHS, Coach Pierce’s football and tennis teams won many league championships and also several state championships. He is a member of the Sturgis High School Athletic Hall of Fame, the Michigan High School Football Coaches Hall of Fame, and the Michigan High School Tennis Coaches Hall of Fame. After his retirement, Coach Pierce continued to follow SHS athletics and was a familiar face in the press box at Trojan home football games. Mrs. Pierce served as Coach Pierce’s personal secretary during his years in education. Her duties ranged anywhere from compiling statistics to serving as assistant director at tennis tournaments to lining the football practice field. In 2012, she received the Fran Herrington Award in honor of her many contributions to Michigan High School football. Coach and Mrs. Pierce did their best to try to help countless student-athletes during their days in Sturgis. It is the sincere hope of the Pierce family that through the Harley and Eva Pierce Memorial Scholarship, they will be able to continue helping young people as they enter college to pursue their career goals.
