Fund Description
Manny Velder (1927-2015) was a teacher, friend, uncle, brother and dedicated theater goer. His creativity took him into macramé, knitting, pottery and cooking. He enjoyed exploring foods from different cultures and culinary traditions. Dining in restaurants excited him. If Manny had a dish that he really liked, he would devote himself to re-creating it in his own kitchen. Chocolate sauerkraut cake especially intrigued him and presented the most difficulty. But he persisted and began to include it at his table. Manny was often asked to cater events. It was he who inspired his niece and nephew's interest in cooking. Manny became a gifted and inspired teacher of high school English. He and his first home room class formed a close bond which lasted many decades. In the 1970's Manny and his friend Ed Cohen published a series of books under the title of Open Ended Stories. Each book contained a collection of unfinished stories centering around a moral dilemma. How the story ended would be left to the reader and/or to creative writing students. Manny's love of theater developed early in life. His two favorite cities were London and New York; both of which he frequented as much as possible. A perfect day for Manny would be attending the theater twice (matinee and evening performance), and at least one movie interspersed with dining at as many different restaurants as possible. In an attempt to pass his love of theater to his students and to broaden their horizons, Manny regularly took a handful of students to see Broadway shows in New York City. The Manny Velder Theater Appreciation Fund is being established as a tribute to Manny's dedication to his students and love of theatre. The fund will be used so that High School students can participate in Everyman Theatre's Theatre Night for Teens program.
