The Baltimore Police Mounted Unit, founded in 1888, is the oldest continuous Mounted Unit within the United States. The unit is mostly deployed in the downtown area both at daytime and at night to help close the local bars. It has been said by police strategists that one mounted officer has the effect of ten police officers. Mounted officers are excellent for community relations, crowd control and crime deterrence. Generous donations from the private sector help provide for care of the horses.
