Story of the Fund
Sang Pyong Brooks survived a 1949 massacre in her South Korean village and, after years of hardship that included being denied schooling, eventually built a life in Elkhart with her husband, Don, who also knew what it meant to start from almost nothing. Together, they worked, saved, and invested carefully, and when their financial advisor raised the idea of charitable giving, they were drawn to scholarships, in part because neither had been able to finish school. In fall 2024, they worked with the Community Foundation to create the Don and Sang Brooks Scholarship to help students who cannot afford higher education, carrying forward what Sang wanted and what Don put plainly: smart kids deserve the chance for a good education.
