Story of the Fund
The scholarship was established in the loving memory of David E. Schnell by his family and friends.
David was born in Elkhart and attended Beardsley Elementary, North Side Middle School, and graduated from Elkhart Central in 1985. He went on to Indiana University, where he was rated the No. 1 Blue Chip Football player and made history by leading IU to back-to-back victories against Ohio State and Michigan.
He played in the All-American Bowl, Peach Bowl, Liberty Bowl (and was its MVP), and the All-Star Japan Bowl. He was inducted into both the Elkhart County and Indiana halls of fame. A proud father of four, David loved IU basketball, family cookouts, fishing, and time at Long Lake.
David also coached at Elkhart Central and North Side Middle School and owned Berkey Insurance Agency. His legacy lives on through this scholarship, inspiring young athletes to lead with heart and integrity.
