The Sanilac County Backpack Fund was created to ensure that no child in our community goes hungry. Each year, the fund supports weekend food backpack programs throughout Sanilac County, providing students in need with a backpack of food every weekend during the school year, helping bridge the gap when school meals are unavailable. Each backpack, assembled locally by volunteers, costs approximately $100 per student per year. This effort is made possible through the collaboration of area schools, churches, organizations, businesses, and caring individuals working together to nourish local children and strengthen our community. Kellogg Foundation’s Youth Project matching initiative in the 1990s, which helped launch YAC in Sanilac County by encouraging community foundations to engage young people directly in philanthropy.
