The Backroads of Appalachia Pass-Through Fund supports Backroads’ mission to drive economic revitalization in Appalachia through adventure tourism, heritage preservation, and small-business development. Backroads works to connect visitors to the region’s scenic byways, outdoor recreation assets, local artisans, and historic communities, creating sustainable tourism opportunities that generate jobs and income in rural West Virginia. The pass-through fund provides a streamlined vehicle for grants and charitable contributions that directly advance these efforts, enabling project development, marketing, community partnerships, and on-the-ground initiatives that strengthen local economies while celebrating the unique culture and landscape of Appalachia.

Darrell K. Cales Trust Scholarship

Darrell K. Cales, a Summers County native and graduate of Sandstone High School, graduated from the 1st WVU dental class in 1962 and established a successful dentistry practice in Rainelle. This scholarship honors his lifelong passion of helping people. The sponsors of this fund anticipate awarding five, $5,000 scholarships annually to Summers County High School graduates.

Disaster Relief Fund

The fiery destruction of the “brick row” residences in February 2013 inspired generosity from friends of the community, local and distant. Once named “Fire Victims Fund,” this Hinton Area Foundation fund now serves as a conduit for donations and retains a balance to help victims of other disasters, such as the 2016 flood and the COVID-19 pandemic.

Established in 2026, the purpose of the Halidon Community Cemetery Fund is to create a vehicle for donations which can immediately provide for the care, maintenance, improvement, and upkeep of the Halidon Community Cemetery in Green Sulphur Springs, WV. Projects include resetting fallen headstones, mending fences, applying gravel, and repairing damaged drainage systems so that the cemetery may be a peaceful final resting place for those who have been buried there.

Hinton Little League

This fund was created by Gene Fife to help maintain the ballpark for the Hinton Little League. Gene graduated from Hinton High School, attended Virginia Tech, and went on to a very successful career in business and finance in London, England. Gene has served as a beacon for the people of Summers County and helped many students with his own scholarship fund.
