The Backroads of Appalachia Pass-Through Fund supports Backroads’ mission to drive economic revitalization in Appalachia through adventure tourism, heritage preservation, and small-business development. Backroads works to connect visitors to the region’s scenic byways, outdoor recreation assets, local artisans, and historic communities, creating sustainable tourism opportunities that generate jobs and income in rural West Virginia. The pass-through fund provides a streamlined vehicle for grants and charitable contributions that directly advance these efforts, enabling project development, marketing, community partnerships, and on-the-ground initiatives that strengthen local economies while celebrating the unique culture and landscape of Appalachia.

Bill Van Sant Scholarship Fund

The Bill Van Sant Scholarship Fund was created in memory of Bill Van Sant by his family. Bill was a retired teacher of social studies and American history who believed in the power of education. He took a very strong interest in the Summers County School System.

Booster Fund

The “Booster” fund provides funding for the educational and experiential enrichment of the children of Summers County. The fund will finance in whole or part programs and projects which will enhance the lives of our children.

Bowles Family Scholarship

This fund was established in memory of Lester and Marjorie Bowles by their children with the intent to give back to their community. It will provide a scholarship for undergraduate study or vocational training for residents of Summers County or graduates of Summers County schools.

Burkey & Mary Lou Lilly Memorial Fund in Honor of Art Lough

This fund was the concept of Burkey Lilly. The inspiration was to honor Art Lough, a former Summers County Extension agent, and the dedicated teachers at Hinton High School. It started as a pass-through fund to pay the premiums of a generous life insurance policy of which, upon the death of the donors, the proceeds would become an endowed fund. It provides a scholarship for a student to study an exact science at Concord University or West Virginia University.

Camp Summers

Sandy Turner established this fund in order to more efficiently use the funds donated to the camp. The fund will support special projects at Camp Summers and also be used as a vehicle to solicit further donations.

Campaign 2000

Campaign 2000 is the general scholarship fund for the Hinton Area Foundation. Scholarships are awarded to students enrolled in post-secondary education who are graduates of Summers County Public Schools, or who are residents of Summers County and have maintained at least a 3.0 grade point average for the four years of high school.

The Chanlett-Avery Fund was established to support efforts in and around Summers County to enhance the health and environment of its residents.

Children's Health Fund (Lacy Wood)

The Will of Lacy Wood left half of his estate to help children with medical issues. The Hinton Area Foundation has established this Field-of-Interest fund to receive and assess requests for aid from the families of children who need medical assistance.

CHPR Gwinn Family Scholarship Fund

The Gwinn Family Scholarship was created by Campbell Gwinn of Green Sulphur Springs. The Gwinn Family was one of the very first families in Summers County with one branch settling in the Lowell area and another in Green Sulphur Springs. This scholarship is for a student attending Concord University and Concord has also contributed significant assets to this fund to make this scholarship possible.

Clark Family Scholarship

The purpose of the Clark Family Scholarship Fund is to give back to the Summers County Community by encouraging Summers County High School students to attend Marshall University or Concord University, preferably seeking a degree in education or business, then return to Summers County to work, volunteer, and encourage philanthropic giving – therefore making the community a better place to live. Those eligible for this scholarship fund are Summers County High School graduating seniors, undergraduate students, or college graduates seeking an advanced degree in education or business at Marshall University or Concord University.

Claude Johnson Memorial Scholarship

This fund was set up in memory of Claude Johnson Jr. by his widow, Vera. Vera had dropped out of school at the age of 16 but then returned to high school to graduate with her eldest son. She continued on at Concord and eventually received a Master’s degree in education from West Virginia University.

Clifford Luther Young Fund (Diabetes)

This fund was created when the late Clifford Young made a bequest in his will to allocate monies to help those suffering from diabetes.

Coach Julian "Buzzy" Richmond Memorial Fund

Coach Julian “Buzzy” Richmond touched many lives during his tenure as a teacher and coach in the Summers County School System. The purpose of this fund is to keep alive the dreams for our students and athletes that Coach Richmond was so proud to support in his lifetime. Preference will be given to students who attend Concord University.
