Georgia DNR Sea Turtle Conservation Fund
Purpose
For over 35 years, Georgia Department of Natural Resources has managed the Georgia Sea Turtle Cooperative. Interns and technicians have patrolled the beach from May through October each year, locating and monitoring nests, protecting the nests from tidal washovers and predation, and inventorying the nests after hatching to evaluate success. Recognizing the importance of the barrier islands to sea turtle nesting beach in Georgia, with Cumberland Island averaging 830 nests over the last 10 years and accounting for 30% of the statewide nesting effort, the Georgia Department of Natural Resources (DNR) is raising funds to continue this critical nest protection work. This is where you can help. Your support directly fuels critical work on the ground. Donations help us: · Conduct daily nesting surveys during the breeding season · Purchase essential field equipment · Employ trained seasonal staff who monitor and protect nests · Improve hatching success · Collect long-term data vital for species management and recovery Beyond immediate protection, your contribution supports cutting-edge research. Through genetic analysis, we can identify individual female turtles, track their reproductive success, and better understand survival patterns over time. This information is essential for developing effective conservation strategies. Please take a moment to support our efforts to protect loggerhead sea turtles in Georgia. Your donation helps preserve their habitat and ensure their survival. Every bit makes a difference!
