Purpose
Founded in 1912, Long Beach Day Nursery (LBDN) is one of the first child care programs in California. Our mission – to provide high quality early care and education for young children of working parents – has become more vital as the number of single-parent and dual-parent working families grow. Deeply rooted in the community, with over 113 years of service, LBDN is more than a child care center, but rather, an iconic institution that continuously pushes the envelope to be the highest-quality early education program. Our objectives include: • Provide high quality affordable care to children ages 6 weeks to 6 years; • Nurture the social, emotional, physical, linguistic and intellectual development of our students; • Prepare children for successful entry into kindergarten; • Partner with parents for the personal growth and development of their children; and, • Enable parents of young children to be employed or complete their education/training. • Surround our teaching team with a system of support so that they may provide the highest quality care for the children and families we serve. LBDN currently serves families at two sites in Long Beach. Our West Branch is in the Washington neighborhood, one of the most impoverished neighborhoods in the city, plagued with high poverty, crime, violence/gang activity; and, while our East Branch is located in a middle-class neighborhood, many of the children that attend that site are also from low income families. Both sites are accredited by the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC), provide early intervention programs free of charge and serve two meals and a snack every day. LBDN is dedicated to the belief that a good start in the formative years of childhood provides children with a lasting foundation for success throughout their lives.
