A New Roof for the Victory Schoolhouse - Onaga Historical Society

The roof of the historic Victory Schoolhouse has faithfully protected this treasured landmark for many years, but it is now showing signs of age and will need replacement in the near future. Addressing this need now will help prevent more extensive and costly damage, ensuring that this important piece of our community's history can continue to educate and inspire future generations. The current Victory Schoolhouse was built in 1891, replacing the original school building erected in 1871. In 1907, it was moved to its location along Victory Road south of Onaga, where it continued serving students until the school closed in 1956. For decades, Victory School stood at the heart of the community, providing not only education but also a gathering place for local families and community activities. After its closure, the building continued to serve the community as a meeting place for the Triple V 4-H Club. Recognizing its historical value, the Onaga Historical Society acquired the schoolhouse on February 13, 1997, ensuring its preservation for future generations. Many local residents can trace family connections to Victory School District #63. Grandparents, parents, and relatives of today’s community members once sat its desks and learned within its walls. Visitors often speak of the special feeling they experience when stepping inside. Children delight in “playing school,” by writing on the chalkboard, practicing with slates, and reading from the historic Kansas Readers, bringing history to life in ways that books alone cannot. The spirit of the schoolhouse is captured perfectly in the words of educator Lon Watters: “School is a building which has four walls with tomorrow inside.” Should contributions exceed the amount needed for the roof replacement, remaining funds will be designated for another important preservation goal: constructing a pole shed to protect the Onaga Historical Society’s collection of historic agricultural equipment.

Bring in the Light: Chapel Stain Glass Window - Wellsprings of Westmoreland

At Wellsprings of Westmoreland, we strive to create an environment that is not just a place of care, but a true home for our residents – a sanctuary filled with warmth, comfort, and joy! We are thrilled to share an opportunity to permanently enhance our shared community space: the installation of a custom-designed stained-glass window. Our current 30-year-old Dalle Verde window is falling apart and cannot be repaired. The new stained-glass window will provide a century of enjoyment for our residents and their families and friends. Wellsprings of Westmoreland is an assisted living, long term care, and memory care facility. Stained glass has a unique way of transforming a room. As daylight moves across the sky, it filters through the vibrant colors, casting a shifting, beautiful glow across our communal chapel area. For our residents, this window will serve as a constant visual anchor – a beacon of calm that sooths the mind, reduces anxiety, and brings a profound sense of peace. Brillant colors and timeless artistic patterns bypass the complex language centers, directly touching the emotional core to spark long-forgotten memories of childhood, faith, and wonder.

Bringing Back the Ballfield: Havensville Rural High School Association

Havensville Rural High School Association is dedicated to more than preserving a building through maintenance and upkeep. What truly keeps us going is the nostalgia that the building and everything around it represents. The stories are endless – the individual memories of the gym and the classrooms, the homemade meals served in the dining room, and the summer memories of rec baseball and softball. Since 2002, the building has served as a community gathering place, continuing to create memories for families through meals shared in the dining room with friends and neighbors, our traditional Independence Day celebration and carnival, and the events that include music, vendor events, and more! The ball field that sits to the north of the building has seen better days. What started off as a football field, later became the baseball and softball field when the high school consolidated with Onaga. The backstop was located on the west side and the field was narrower than most, but the town made it work. In the late 80s, concerned for the safety of the kids running into the highway for foul balls, the backstop was moved to the east side, land was generously given by Jerry Reisinger to expand the field to the north, and the Snack Shack was built. Hundreds of memories have been made on the field! Now, there has been renewed interest in bringing a rec team back to Havensville, creating more memories for the youth of our area! In order for that to happen, some improvements must be made to the field: • Repaired/updated fencing • Equipment for field upkeep and maintenance • Lights if necessary • Bases and other field equipment • Improvements to the playing surface With these improvements, we hope not only to bring a rec team back to Havensville, but also to host fun tournaments and other events. These events can help generate the funds needed to maintain the field, and, eventually, support the continued operation of a rec program.

Caring Closet - Meeting Students Where They Are - USD 322 Onaga

At USD 322, we believe supporting children means looking beyond the classroom. Our Caring Closet helps remove barriers that can make it difficult for students to learn, participate, and feel confident at school. We continue to see increasing needs among the families and students we serve as the cost of everyday necessities rises. Our Caring Closet provides food for families experiencing hardship, clothing, PE and everyday shoes, socks, hygiene products, and other essential items. We also help families replace broken or lost glasses when insurance will not yet cover a new pair. These may seem like small things, but to the child who needs them, they can make a tremendous difference. The Caring Closet also allows us to respond to needs that arise throughout the school year. We replenish classroom snacks after the supplies families provide at the beginning of the year run out, and we help teachers provide items for individual student needs, including noise-canceling headphones, headphones for iPad learning, feminine hygiene products, and other supplies that help students successfully access their education. We also purchase food, including perishable items when possible, to supplement community donations and help families prepare nutritious, complete meals at home. Every donation we receive helps us serve our students and families above and beyond what our school can provide through regular resources. It allows us to say, “Yes, we can help,” when a family needs food, a child needs shoes, a student breaks their glasses, or a teacher recognizes that a student needs something extra to succeed. Each donation helps us keep these resources available and provide support with dignity and compassion. The Caring Closet is truly a reflection of our community. Local businesses, families, organizations, and individuals come together because they believe in our children.

Fill the Shelves, Fuel the Future - USD 322 Onaga

With the implementation of a school cell phone ban, students at Onaga Schools are spending more time in the library and rediscovering the enjoyment of reading. Students are coming in looking for classics, historical books, and other high-interest titles, creating an exciting opportunity to build on this renewed interest. We are seeking funding to establish a dedicated library book fund that will allow us to purchase new and updated books for students of all grade levels and interests. Donations will be used directly to expand the collection with engaging, age-appropriate titles that students will want to check out and read. By keeping the library collection current and relevant, we can encourage students to continue choosing books during their free time and develop reading habits that extend beyond the classroom. Students are asking for books—now we need to make sure we have enough of the right books to keep them coming back.

Forget-Me-Not Pregnancy Loss Fund

Miscarriage and pregnancy loss affect millions of families each year, yet the grief that follows is often experienced in silence. Behind every loss is a family carrying heartbreak, navigating an uncertain path toward healing, and searching for understanding in a world that may not fully recognize their pain. At nearly 18 weeks gestation, Josh and Valerie (Ramage) Mapes experienced the devastating loss of their baby girl. Reflecting on that difficult time, Valerie shares, “Our miscarriage was one of the most isolating experiences I have ever gone through.” Their story is deeply personal, but it is far from unique. Countless families face pregnancy loss and the overwhelming sense of grief, loneliness, and unanswered questions that can accompany it. Pregnancy loss does not end the love, hopes, dreams, or memories that families hold in their hearts. By honoring those losses, we can ensure that others walking a similar path find the support, compassion, and resources they need. That is why we are establishing the Forget-Me-Not Pregnancy Loss Fund. This charitable fund will provide grants to nonprofit organizations dedicated to supporting individuals and families affected by miscarriage, stillbirth, and infant loss. Your Gift Will: • Create a lasting charitable resource dedicated to pregnancy and infant loss support. • Strengthen nonprofit organizations serving grieving families. • Honor the memories of babies lost too soon while bringing hope to those left behind. • Build a legacy of compassion that will support families for generations to come. Loss can be isolating, but no family should have to walk through it alone. Together, our community can provide comfort, understanding, and healing while honoring the memories of babies who will never be forgotten. Make a gift today and help create a lasting legacy of hope, remembrance, and compassion through the Forget-Me-Not Pregnancy Loss Fund.

Gear Up for the Future: Belvue Fire Cadet PPE Project

The Belvue Township Fire Department recently launched a Cadet Firefighter Program to introduce local youth to the fire service while developing teamwork, leadership, community service, and the skills needed to become the next generation of volunteer firefighters. One of our greatest needs is ensuring every cadet has personal protective equipment (PPE) to safely participate in approved training activities. Currently, our cadets are utilizing surplus gear obtained through the Forestry Service, which has allowed us to get the program started but is not a sustainable long-term solution for properly equipping each participant. Donations would be used to purchase individually assigned PPE for each cadet, including a helmet, protective coat and pants, gloves, and boots, at an estimated cost of approximately $950 per youth. As an all-volunteer department, our firefighters are already contributing their time, experience, and mentorship to train these young people and help the program succeed. A donor’s $950 investment can fully outfit one cadet from helmet to boots, replacing surplus equipment with gear appropriate for their training and development. This project is more than purchasing protective equipment—it is an investment in young people who have already chosen to serve their community and in the future of the volunteer fire service in Belvue Township.

Keeping Donations Fresh - Community Care Ministries

As Community Care Ministries (CCM) celebrates 25 years of serving our neighbors, we remain committed to providing compassionate medical care for uninsured individuals, nutritious food through our food pantries, and vital social support services. From our Wamego location serving residents of Pottawatomie and Wabaunsee counties to our food pantry in Alma, we work every day to help individuals and families meet their basic needs and improve their quality of life. Food insecurity continues to be a significant challenge across Kansas, especially as many families face the impact of reduced SNAP benefits and rising grocery costs. Thanks to the generosity of Harvesters and local businesses, CCM receives a steady supply of food donations that help stock our pantries and support our community. However, our ability to accept and preserve these donations is limited by inadequate refrigeration space. To continue meeting the growing demand and ensure that fresh, nutritious food remains available to those who need it most, CCM is seeking funding for a new refrigerator. This essential equipment will allow us to safely store more donated food, reduce waste, and provide greater food security for the families who rely on our services. With your support, we can expand our capacity, make the most of every food donation, and continue our mission of caring for our community for years to come. Every contribution brings us one step closer to ensuring that no neighbor goes without the nourishment and support they need.
